Maybe you’ve heard of our new Aspen™10, but you’re unsure what is, what it can do, or why you should be excited about it. No worries. In this blog article, I’ll provide you with a brief introduction to the exciting technology behind this new device.
When our team from Campbell Scientific attended the Meteorological Technology World Expo 2023 in Geneva, Switzerland, we were excited. We were excited not only to participate in this global event, but also to share the latest innovation in monitoring technology: the Aspen 10 IoT Edge Device.
Networking is a common business practice when attending conferences, but for those attending the Meteorological Technology World Expo, they had a different experience. They were able to witness the use of the Internet of Things (IoT) for better spatial resolution. These event participants got a first look at the device that turns a regular sensor into a smart sensor, and they were surprised by the solutions the Aspen 10 could offer them.
Cloud Connectivity for Rapid Network Densification
One exciting aspect the Aspen 10 offers you is cloud connectivity out of the box for rapid network densification. At the event, the product manager, David Hammond, demonstrated CampbellCloud and CampbellGo, which are the software products that integrate with the Aspen 10 to provide a complete end-to-end, field-to-cloud experience. The CampbellGo app’s ease of use in wirelessly onboarding Aspen 10 devices to the cloud was something the industry hadn't seen before.

How the Aspen 10 Hardware Compares with Other Network Densification Solutions
Organizers of the event interviewed another product manager, Kevin Rhodes, who demonstrated how the Aspen 10 hardware contrasts with other devices in the field. Major features, Kevin explained, include its small footprint, how it co-locates with the sensor that is collecting data, and its simple installation.
“The idea,” Kevin said, “is that in 10 minutes, you can have everything up and pumping data to the cloud with your IoT device.” Learn more from this video:

How Others Are Reacting to the New Reality of Aspen 10 Data Collection
Within the environmental monitoring industry, most people are accustomed to a traditional look for environmental data acquisition. When event attendees saw the Aspen 10, Kevin noticed their surprise at how compact the device is. They were also amazed by its near field communication (NFC) and Bluetooth capabilities.
Managing the cellular connection and data collection can be a challenge for some. But, with the Aspen 10’s connection to the cloud, this becomes a low-maintenance task. Sara Van Klooster, a Campbell Scientific meteorologist attending the event, realized just how much booth visitors appreciated this benefit. “It’s really, really convenient to have somebody else manage the cellular connection and the data management and the accounts that usually take a lot of time for people to configure,” said Sara. “Now, the customer gets to focus on the data rather than the maintenance.”
For critical data, as well as just a future-proof way to collect data, it’s exciting to see that the Aspen 10 is speaking to the needs of the industry and surprising people along the way.
The Purpose Behind the Solution
Nearing the end of the event, Kevin went to a nearby booth to ask if he could try quickly connecting the Aspen 10 to a Wintersense surface temperature sensor. The booth exhibitor was intrigued and agreed. Within just a few clicks, the Aspen 10 and Wintersense were connected and publishing data, leaving the exhibitor stunned.
Time is an important life currency, not only for those deploying monitoring networks, but for those needing access to critical data. Seeing attendees’ reactions to the easy Aspen 10 installation verifies that this new device will have the positive impact it was designed for. This is why we’re excited about the Aspen 10. Now that you have been introduced to this device and its technology, I hope you’re excited about it as well.
